Cedar and Metal Prep for Painting

RHONDDA REQUIREMENTS FOR PREPARATION OF

EXTERIOR CEDAR WOOD AND METAL SURFACES

 

Proper preparation work is essential to assure uniformity of the appearance of the cedar wood, metal roofs, and doors and provide the longest lasting results.

 

PREPARATION FOR APPLYING SOLID STAIN TO CEDAR SIDING

 

Clean cedar:   Wash with a 50% bleach and 50% water solution or Behr Wood Cleaner Brightener Conditioner or any similar product.  Follow the directions on the back.  Power wash the cedar and allow to dry at least 24 hoursThe length of time needed for the cedar to dry depends on the weather.

 

Secure any loose cedar siding boards and replace any rotten pieces. 

Caulk any holes, smaller cracks, edges, etc. as needed with a paintable Silicone Caulk.

 

Apply a premium exterior oil based primer, Benjamin Moore’s Fresh Start, to the cedar.  Allow 24 hours before applying the top coat. 

                            Any unit with a solid stain would not need priming unless it is peeling, cracking, or bare wood is

                        visible.  If the solid stain is in good shape, clean and apply solid stain.

 

Apply 2 coats of the solid stain. 

 

REPEAT EVERY 10 YEARS OR SOONER IF APPEARANCE REQUIRES IT.

 

PREPARATION FOR APPLYING NATURAL CEDAR STAIN TO CEDAR SIDING

 

Remove any solid, semitransparent stain with appropriate stain/paint removal product.

 

Clean cedar:  Wash with a 50% bleach and 50% water solution or Behr Wood Cleaner Brightener Conditioner or any similar product.  Follow the directions on the back.  Power wash the cedar and allow to dry at least 24 hours.  The length of time needed for the cedar to dry depends on the weather.

 

Secure any loose cedar siding boards and replace any rotten pieces. 

 

Sand to bare wood, remove any remaining black or discolored surfaces.  Remove dust caused by sanding.

 

Caulk any holes, smaller cracks, edges, etc. as needed with a clear paintable Silicone Caulk.

 

Apply two coats of Benjamin Moore Oil Base Semi Transparent Natural Cedar Tone.  Or a clear coat CWF-Natural, Sikkens Cetol SRD in Natural Light or Behr Weatherproofing Wood Finish in Natural may be used instead.

 

REPEAT EVERY 2 YEARS OR SOONER IF APPEARANCE REQUIRES IT.

 

PREPARATION FOR THE METAL ROOFS AND METAL DOOR

 

To clean the metal:  Wash with good household cleaner.  Allow to dry. 

 

Sand any loose paint or rust.  For larger areas a circular or compact finish sander works well.  For smaller areas use steel wool or a piece of sand paper. 

 

Apply a premium latex metal primer, Stix carried by Benjamin Moore, to the metal roofs and door where you previously sanded. It is not necessary to prime the whole roof.

 

Paint with two coats of the appropriate paint color/product designated for your court.

 

REPEAT EVERY 5 YEARS OR SOONER IF APPEARANCE REQUIRES IT.
